Now you're making me craving for a slice, Obachan, and this looks so good. A similar piece in Norway would be about 800 yen!

Dear Obachan,
I cooked salted mackral bought at a korean supermarket tonight, and my fiance didn't even eat a single bite because he thought it was too fishy!
Poor guy ate miso soup and rice for dinner.
Anyway it was a little fishy even for me. How do I fix it? Why does it look so great when I see people cooking broiled/grilled little fish?
By the way the 100yen japanese store have invaded washington dc area. they are great.

800 yen!! OMG!! I shouldn’t complain about the price here, then. But I’m sure your handmade sweets are much better than most of the store-bought cakes here.
Big Bok
It was good. Would have been better with more apple slices inside, though.

Too bad that it was too fishy for you guys… Being brought up here in Kochi, my whole family is so used to fishy food so maybe I’m the worst person to give you an advice on that… Anyway, we often eat broiled/grilled fish with grated Japanese horseradish (daikon) and just a little soy sauce or ponzu, and/or a squeeze of some kind of citrus like yuzu, sudachi, kabosu, etc. and I guess lemon can be used as an substitute. That should make the fish less fishy, I suppose.
So now the 100 yen store is invading the whole world, ha. They do have good things, but some things…such as hand tools like screwdrivers… broke real easily on the first try :( Be careful.

Sorry to post smelly fish comment on your lovely apple dessert column. Anyway, today I deboned the aforementioned fish, and fried it in a little bit of soysauce, garlic, and lime juice hoping for the best. Still no good.
I think it's not that it smells fisy, but rather that it smells liver-ish! It tastes a little bitter too.
I love fishy fish, but this was livery fish! I ended up throwing away 3 fish down the garbage disposal.
The 100yuen japanese stores are run by Koreans. I got some nice looking pottery each for $1.79/piece. A full dinnerware for two including bamboo mats, chopsticks, rice bowls, little serving trays was only $19.00. A good deal!

Hey joanna,
So sorry that you had to throw away the fish. I had no idea why it smelled liver-ish and tasted bitter. Better luck next time! : )
Yeah, I agree. 100 yen shop is a great place to buy dinnerwares. I really regretted buying an umbrella there, though. I used it right after I bought it, and it broke before I got home, in about 10 minutes :(
